14 Days Birding in Botswana & Zambia |

|
Days 1 – 3: Moremi Game Reserve - TENTED
We fly from Johannesburg to Maun, the gateway
to the Okavango Delta. From Maun we journey by
road to the Xakanaxa area (pronounced Kuh-Kuh-
Nuh-Kuh) in the Moremi Game Reserve where our
camp has been set up in a pristine wilderness site.
Birding in the Moremi offers a great diversity of
habitats from permanent delta waterways to
ephemeral floodplains, mature woodland,
savannah and grasslands. (Highlight Species:
Black Coucal, Swamp Nightjar, Wattled Crane,
Brown Firefinch, Retz’s Helmet-Shrike)
|
 |
Days 4 - 6: Khwai River - TENTED
Our camp moves to the Khwai concession area
between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe
National Park. This is one of the eastern-most
extensions of the Okavango Delta and birding
along the river is particularly productive especially
in the summer months. The Khwai region is
renowned for it’s high concentration of raptors
both nocturnal and diurnal. Here we undertake
walking safaris and night drives to see some of
the nocturnal species in the area. (Bat Hawk,
Greater Painted-Snipe, Allen’s Gallinule, African
Crake, Mosque Swallow, African Golden Oriole.)
|
 |
Days 7 - 9: Savuti (Chobe N.P.) - TENTED
Our drive to Savuti takes us over the Makwikwe
sand ridge and up onto the vast Mababe
depression into the more arid Kalahari scrublands
which is interspersed with Terminalia sandveld
and mopane scrub. Savuti itself is host to a large
number of predators as well as a healthy
population of elephant bulls. Our birding in this
area focuses on the numerous Kalahari species
such as the Violet-Eared Waxbill, Black-Faced
Waxbill, Cut-Throat and Red-Headed Finches. The
Savuti Marsh is particularly productive during the summer months when flocks of over one hundred
Steppe Eagles can be seen at termite alate
emergences. (Caspian Plover, Secretarybird,
Bronze-Winged Courser, Bradfield’s Hornbill) |
 |
Days 10 & 11: Chobe River - LODGE
We continue northward from Savuti to the Chobe
river where four countries meet (Botswana,
Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia). This area will
produce some fabulous birding particularly along
the Chobe river. We will also be spending time in
the Baikea (teak) woodlands searching for some of
the miombo woodland specials. A boat trip on the
Chobe river will get us close to many of the bird
species in addition to a great variety of wildlife.
(African Skimmer, African Finfoot, Rock Pratincole,
Collared Palm-Thrush, Thrush Nightingale,
Northern Grey-Headed Sparrow, River Warbler.) |
 |
Days 12 & 13: Livingstone – Zambia - LODGE
We travel through the town of Kasane to the
Kazangula border post where a ferry will transport
us over the Zambezi river and into Zambia. In and
around Livingstone our birding will focus on the
miombo and riparian woodland species. Birding
around the Victoria Falls and Batoka Gorge (home
of the Taita Falcon) is always particularly rewarding
but we will range a little further afield in search of some of the regions specials. We take a sunset
cruise on the Zambezi River on our last evening –
a perfect finale for our safari. (Bearded Scrub-
Robin, Narina Trogon, Miombo Pied Barbet, Taita
Falcon, Three-banded Courser, Verreaux’s Eagle,
Madagascar Bee-Eater, Green-Backed Honeybird,
Broad-Tailed Paradise Whydah). |
 |
Day 14:
Our safari ends after breakfast and a final
session of birding in the lodge grounds. From the
lodge you will transfer to Livingstone Airport
where you will connect with your onward flights. |
