Luxurious camps in private reserves & rest camps in National Parks
Even though South Africa hardly compares with the great safari countries of Africa such as Botswana, Tanzania and Kenya, it has many game reserves and national parks where you can find the characteristic flora and fauna of South Africa. Many of the game reserves are fairly small and they can be found all over South Africa. It treasures many varying and unique landscapes and beautiful mountain formations. Valleys and waterfalls are a surprisingly common occurrence. The reserves often provide their own characteristic wildlife and in many of them you can enjoy walks and picnics. Others, however, have black rhino, buffalo, elephant and lion, and there you must stay in your car.

 |
The Classic Game Drive is a marvellous supplement for all tours and a must if you have not done it before. The best-known routes, such as the Garden Route, take you through national parks. The Kruger National Park with the Private Reserves nearby is a place not to miss. This large Nature Reserve is almost the size of Sicily and continues far into Mozambique, where it occupies an even greater area. This is one of the world's largest protected nature reserves where wildlife is undisturbed by humans. |
| |
As a public park the Kruger National Park has many reasonably priced rest camps and bush hotels. Along the borders of the western section of the park you will find many exclusive private reserves. These private reserves are connected to the Kruger National Park and wildlife can move freely throughout the area. It is not possible to enter any private reserve from the Kruger Park. The private reserves offer own small lodges/hotels with between 10 and 50 rooms. They are usually extremely exclusive with correspondingly high prices.

Private Reserves
All private reserves/lodges are run in a similar way and accommodation includes almost everything (meals, fantastic service, game drives etc.). You have your 'own' ranger, who takes care of you all the time from early breakfast until late evening. The day begins with a game drive (just before sunrise) in open 4WD vehicles. You return for breakfast between 9 and 10 o'clock, then spend the morning on a game walk together with an armed ranger. In the afternoon you go on another game drive with a short coffee break at sunset. After that you continue game driving with a spotlight, to watch the nocturnal animals. By the time you have dinner at the lodge (around 8.30) you will be feeling fairly tired from the overwhelming impressions of African wildlife and beauty.
|
 |
In addition to being luxurious and comfortable, the private lodges have other advantages. You will not see very many cars in the areas. The 4WD vehicles will take you though some rough terrain to track down animals. The drivers remain in radio contact in order to find the animals quicker and respect the appearance and privacy of all animals.
After a couple of days in these lodges you should have seen the popular animals such as elephant, rhino, hippo, hyena, crocodile, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah and all the antelopes. The knowledge of the local rangers is of a high srabdard, making plants, trees, insects and birds seem just as exciting as the big five. The best-known reserves/lodges in the Kruger National Park are Sabi Sabi, Mala Mala, Londolozi and Sabi Sand. Most of them comprise a main lodge and various bush camps in the trees, on the cliffs or at the best vantage points. They are always original and beautiful.
The private reserves in other parts of South Africa are run in a similar manner.
