Also on offer is a tour of the battlefields. Witness to decisive events in the annals of three imperious, yet vastly disparate nations, our Kingdom of the Zulu's easily accessible Battlefields exude power and unmistakable presence...infusing the visitor with an inescapable sense of momentous occasion.
It was among the picturesque hills and rock formations of this sweeping landscape that fearless, spear-wielding foot soldiers of the all-conquering Zulu kings first encountered the rampant British Empire's sophisticated fire- power... and where each faced the unfamiliar guerilla-warfare tactics of the Boer - descendants of the west European settlers who five generations earlier had claimed divine right to this 'Promised Land'.

There are so many options to choose form. A visit to the valley of a thousand hills is a must. The breathtaking Valley of a Thousand Hills is an exciting component of Durban and South Africa's Kingdom of the Zulu.
This is where rural Africa links arms gently with urban living. Nature reserves fringe on vibrant villages and leafy towns where specialist book, decor, and bric-a-brac stores jostle with coffee shops and boutiques in village malls and markets. Off shoots of the route take travelers through the Krantzkloof Gorge and Inanda Dam, to the scenic Shongweni dam.
2 hours north of Umhlanga is one of the worlds finest game parks - Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park.Set in the heart of Zululand, the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws, where today the "big five" of African legend stalk the verdant savannah. Established in 1895 game viewing is the prime attraction. Viewing hides overlook pans and waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range. |

There are many optional extras to choose from including diving, deep sea fishing, kite surfing, surfing, helicopter flips and perhaps a visit to the Natal Sharks Board, situated in Umhlanga. The Natal Sharks Board (NSB) services 29 kilometres of netting, spread at intervals along 320 km of coastline in KwaZulu-Natal, thereby providing protection against shark attack at 38 localities. It employs about 170 staff members, most of whom put to sea on 17 boats to service the nets. The Sharks Board welcomes and encourages visits by members of the public to its Umhlanga Rocks offices. On offer is a sensational multimedia program. It is a three-screen, surround-sound window on the shark's role in the oceans. Special effects include wind, intelligent lights and the more adventurous should sit near the front to be sprayed with a fine mist of water at appropriate moments. This 25-minute show not only entertains but is also educational, with King Neptune teaching an errant turtle about the importance of sharks. |
|
This is followed by a shark dissection, which provides a unique opportunity to see (and smell!) the internal machinery of one of the ocean's most awesome predators. Visit the Display Hall and view the large variety of lifelike replicas of sharks, fish and rays, including that of a 892 kg great white shark. Browse in the Curio Shop where a treasure chest of unusual and stylish gifts, including hand crafts, T-shirts, leather goods, jewelry and other ornaments, await you.
The Display Hall and Curio Shop are open to the public from 8.00 to 16.00 Monday to Friday. The audio-visual is presented at the following times, followed by a shark dissection.
